SPP Assignement 1 / thinking what the hell am i going to do when uni is done

part of SPP this year involves finding job advertisements and creating mock applications for them. i can only assume this is to encourage us to think about employment after university. unfortunately this is all i seem to be able to think about just recently as a result of the added pressure of potential homelessness if i don't get a job to pay my rent. my landlord is a big guy.

the job adverts listed below are the types of job i am and will be pursuing. the reason i haven't been too ambitious with the types of job i have selected is simple. i don't have time to waste dreaming like all of the middle class students. it costs money to live in my life therefor i need to apply for jobs that a stand a chance of getting. these jobs are also pretty well suited to my background experience as i have done this type of work before, also they will keep me up to date with AV technology and provide plenty of networking opportunity. you may have to click on the jov ads in order to read them.

The Diamond Promotional Video Client Project

The video will be a compilation of gig footage shot in and around the venue, cut together to one single music track. Therefore the video will be the same length as the track. Animated titles which will flash and dance to the music will appear at equal spacing’s throughout the video to display any necessary text or well established tribute act names, the video will be long enough for 6 – 8 title frames with no more than 8 words in each to keep them short and straight to the point. No single shot either static or moving will be longer than 3 seconds, keeping the pace of the video fast and hard-hitting. Many different special effects will be utilized in the video such as time lapses, super slow motion, strobe and lightning effects etc to provide plenty of contrast between shots and avoid any loss of interest from the viewer’s perspective.

Research Question
To what extent has modern technology such as the internet affected the way we perceive narrative through film?

Research and experimentation into the impact modern technology has on film must include some form of data or statistics from the past in contrast to the modern day situation put together in charts and graphs. Tables of statistics will reveal specific areas of change throughout the past century making it more apparent which of these areas of change can be attributed to a technological advancement and how much credit is due to the advancement. To gain insight into how audiences perceive film in the modern age, Re- editing experiments may prove beneficial. For example, the film Pulp Fiction, famous for its none-linear story line may work just as well if it was edited into a linear story line. Smaller experiments may include taking an old film such as the Great Train Robbery or metropolis and editing it down into a modern hard hitting trailer to see if the footage is sufficient to use for this purpose despite its age. The reverse of this might be to take a modern film featuring vast amounts of technology and see how the footage works edited into an old silent film with text frames. Feedback from audiences about such material will help substantially to generate useful data, and data only has to be analysed correctly to become useful.

Documentary Project

the final decision me and my group have made about how to go about shooting this documentary is to go with a myth busting theme, by this i mean we are going to take all of the facts we are told by the Medea such as the recession is causing an increase in crime, or the recession is causing people to drink more and consider all these facts just myths, and to find out the truth we are going to see what the general public think. however we will draw no conclusions in the film, we will mealy make a point and get a variety of opinions from various people, it will be the audiences job to draw conclusions.

How i will fulfill my roll as editor

as editor it is difficult to go into great detail at this time about what I'm going to do as i have no footage to work with. however the things i need to make sure of are quick clean cuts between shots keeping everything short and simple, we only have ten Minits to tell the entire story. another thing i need to preconsider is how to visually display data, the link below is to an online tutorial that shows you how to make professional video graphs. i will be using this tutorial and others like it in this project

another way of displaying information i will use are score bordes on the corners of the frame somewhat similar to what game shows use. i will use these score boards to make it easier for the audience to keep track of the differences of opinion when posing a question to random members of the general public.

the title of the documentary me and my group will produce is Recession busting sales. the angle we intend to take on this is going to be the increase in middle class shoplifting. stealing not to survive, but to maintain a good quality of life with less money. statistics show that shoplifting has increased 20% in the last year and it is believed that this is largely down to the middle class population stealing products such as ipods or even luxury food items to keep up appearances. in my research i found many related articles with headlines such as confessions of a brazen middle class shoplifter and the rise of the middle class shoplifter.

Malac Shoot

Today we shot the script of Malac at a member of my groups flat. we shot the whole script numerous times from three different camera angles, one angle per character and the one in the middle with both characters in shot.We also did close up shots on things such as the brief case and the victims tied hands.

i feel that as a group we suffer with a lack of organisation, this is a problem we will need to address in the preparation before the shoot of course work three. i think our final Malac film will not be as good as it could be because of lighting. we planned to light the set with candles but were aware that we would still need some electric light as the room had no windows. however the ceiling light in the room was far to bright and the only other light source we had was a LED torch, i assumed that there would be small lamps or a few different bulbs to choose from at the location. this is something we need to pay more attention to and be more prepared for in future shoots.

overall i think the shoot went well and i am looking forward to seeing what can be done with the footage. when the film has been edited and finalised i will upload it to this blog under the title of Malac.

Favourite Script

i have just spent quite some time reading the the three scripts for coursework 3. no contest my favourite script is bogdan. i think the script touches on an interesting issue. the sort of locations needed for this script wont be to difficult to find, and whilst reading i instantly began thinking of ideas, especially for the grass verge scenes. another thing that struck me about this script is the very little dialog, this will leave room to tell more of the story with the moving image as apposed to the spoken word.

the more diverse your knowledge the more interesting the interconnections, we can boost our creativity simply by learning interesting new things.
to properly discuss this point i would like to touch on something taught to us last year, the differences between design and redesign. redesign is when a creation is taken and perhaps updated or to use a metaphor shot from a different perspective. whereas design is supposedly completely original. however in my opinion nothings completely original, every creation is in affect a summary of the creators inspirations, so it stands to reason that the more diverse a persons knowledge of interesting things the more inspiration that person has. i have a personal theory that when a person is made interested or intrigued they simply begin to think faster, thus generating more ideas.

location scouting, Risk assesment and Health and safety

Today's location scouting seminar made me realise that there is so much more to location scouting that finding a place that looks the part (thanks to health and safety). many aspects of a location have to be pre considered, eg weather conditions, light conditions, traffic conditions, permission to use, potential health hazards such as slippy floors, structural integrity of set, trip hazards and the list goes on.

my personal opinion on health and safety legislation is that the worlds gone mad. health and safety is the system we put in place to protect ourselves from the American suing culture we seem to be slowly adopting. almost one in five television adverts are about suing people because u were not looking where you were going or because you went up a ladder that you knew was the wrong type and fell off of it. its a joke. personal feelings aside ill do my best to fill out detailed risk assessment forms when planning a shoot.

Keytar MIDI Controll

over the summer my side project has been to design and make a keytar MIDI controller, i have now compleated this. the keytar is made from 3 thicknesses of 18mm MDF for the body and 1 thickness for the neck and head, i also salveged parts from a broken keyboard. the keytar is ideal for both stage and studio use and can give a keyboard player the ability to strut around a stage with the carisma of a guitar player.

when i started to think about my creativity and for what purpose i use it i couldn't just put it into one box. the conclusion i came to is that i create for two reasons, either because I'm set a project brief at NTU, or just for a laugh because im bored. after thinking more about this my best work in my opinion comes from when im creating just for creating sake. however after looking over some of my work i noticed that the work i do with NTU is produced much more professionally and alot better quality. so concluding my thaughts i prefer the quality of my NTU creations however i think the material is better in my piss about creations, so maybe i should spend more time over the quality and professionalism.

when asked to write about my practitioner development activity i didn't really know what to write about. its not that i don't do anything outside of uni, but out of all the things i do i wasn't sure if any of them where that relevant. so in this post i will write about the outside activities i do that seem most relevant to the development of me, a multimedia practitioner, sorry i just like saying that.,

drawing
i spend alot of my free time drawing, mainly tattoo designs i hope to scar to myself one day. i understand that tattoos are not that closely related to multimedia. however i beleave the process of designing and drawing a tattoo is all good practice. a wise man once said to me "design is design, whatever the intention". actually i just made that up but there maybe some truth there

software experiments
i am very interested in what can be achieved with different pieces of multimedia software, and i am even more interested in what can be achieved when you use two or more pieces of software in conjunction with each other, or in conjunction with camera trickery. even though i very rarely produce i piece of work from these experiments the knowledge and information gained from these experiments help me when it comes to project work.

don't ask me why i count this as an activity, because i don't know. however an excuse to sit on my ass and call it work is an excuse to sit on my ass and call it work. plus there is no such thing as to much inspiration.

howdy all, its been i while i know. sorry about that. just recently i have been rather busy at my place of work. i work at a school as a performing arts tecky, mainly in the studio and theatre, the reason for my recent busyness is because the school puts on an annual show every February. this years show is We Will Rock You and for this show i am designing and building the set, designing and rigging lights and operating the sound on the five days of the show, if anyone would like to come and see it feel free and ill keep you posted about it. its good to be back.

Luke Burtons Oneshot and my review

this is Luke Burton's oneshot video, today i was sat next to him as he was editing it and we ended up working together to produce the audio. we filtered out all the high frequencies and reduced the volume of the Franky goes to Hollywood track using adobe soundbooth to make the music sound like it is coming from another room. however in places for few second blocks we brought back the high frequencies and increased the volume to create the illusion that the toilet door is opening and closing.

things i like about this video my video doesnt have.

i like the way luke intended his video to be funny and it turned out to be funny whereas i intended my video to be scary and it isn't.
i like the way luke didn't rely on technology during the shooting process, its simple but effective.

final oneshot

This is my final oneshot short, my group liked my earl er oneshot video and ran with the idea of using monitors and web cams. the easyest part of shooting this video was shooting the pre recorded clips to go on the monitors. the hardest part was synchronising ourselves with the clip on the monitors, as you probably can tell. in many ways i prefer the oneshot i made to present to the group, less effort went into the shot but i think it has a better overall effect. this is probably due to the fact there is some form of lighting in the first one.

overall i thought that it was a good project, i enjoyed doing a project with a group as i usually do projects by myself or with a friend. what i found most interesting was how every group member fell into a natural roll and how my natural roll wasn't what it normally is. i was in shot, usually I'm a tecky. i learnt how to do a few extra things on premier which I'm happy about and made a few future project buddies, so overall a pretty good project despite the fact i could be happier with the final video.

today me and my group filmed the footage for our oneshot short, we filmed it in the Waverly building as we needed an inside location and two large computer monitors, we didn't manage to use any interesting lighting in the shot because the power outlets where computer only outlets. if you look at my previous posts the onshot i made myself in my basement you will see a desk lamp, i intended to use this in the final video but couldn't due to the outlet problem. i wanted the lamp to flicker on and off towards the end of the shot as i there was a power surge, but if i did plug the lamp in there would have been a real power surge. here are a few photo of the shooting process.

colour and light

Figuring light, and the intangible exhibition at Djanogoly art gallery lakeside.

I found this piece very interesting and eye catching, the artist Rebecca partridge has used I wide collection of both contrasting and complimentary colors. Even more interesting is the use of plain white for the background and the way in which the concentration of colour reduces as the geometrical shapes near the edges of the piece, as if creating movement.

When this piece first caught my eye the different colors on each side of all the geometrical shapes appeared random. But as I looked more and more I noticed that the majority of the shapes were either themed with warm colours or cold colours, but then just to ruin my theory I noticed there were a few shapes consisting of both warm and cold colours. That’s what I like about this piece, it confuses me.

Light has been taken into account with this piece in a very interesting way, some of the geometrical shapes are a solid colour but the ones with a lower concentration of colour appear translucent against the white background. More interesting than that is the larger geometrical shapes near the edges. they have the least concentration of colour, what I found interesting was how these shapes don’t appear translucent but appear in the distance, giving the picture great depth

i realised that it is difficult to make an interesting video when you only have one shot to play with, so i had the idea of having a monitor in the shot, that way a pre recorded video could be made and edited and cut as many times as necessary before hand. this is a short video i made myself to present the idea to my group. after showing my group this video they liked the idea and decided to run with it. in the final video we are hopeing to have 2 computer monitors with 2 people sat in front of them. however we are going to experiment with people moveing from monitor to monitor. me and sam are going to be the people in shot and martin and steve are going to direct and operate the camera. i used a desk lamp to light my mini set in the video below, im thinking of using this same lamp in the final video but maybe attaching a dimmer switch for better control.

The rule of thirds

The rule of thirds is a compositional tool used in design and any other visual art. The rule states that an image can be divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines. The points on the picture where the lines cross can be used to place the main features of the picture, or photograph. Using this visual tool gives a more interesting and professional looking picture than it would if you were to just centre the main feature.

The rule has been around for centuries and has been taken into account in the creation of oil paintings through to digital photography. As an amateur photographer myself I was surprised how much better photographs you can take when considering this rule.

pixalation project final video

this is my final pixalation project video, some of the footage was shot in my student house and the rest was shot with my project group. what i found interesting about the group footage was its all the same photos but the ways in which the different group members edited the pictures in different ways gave a completely different feel and mood to the video. the pool playing part of the video was shot in the basement of my student house, this was probably the most time consuming part of the video to create, if you look at my previous posts there are a few behind the scenes pictures of the making of that.
if i had more time to do this project i would have recorded some audio samples of pool balls hitting each other ind added them to the audio track to create a more realistic audio for that part of the video.

the summer holiday of 2004 me and a few friends invested in a digital camera and spent hours and hours filming random things and editing on movie maker. the videos below are some of the first videos i ever made, i realise the quality is crap and the editing is very poor however these videos mean alot to me because the making of them made me realise what i wanted to do at university. have a look at them, i hope they make you laugh.

these are a few of my pencil tattoo designs, i never did very well in art at school but iv always had a thing for drawing random pictures such as these ones, later on in life i realised that they would make good tattoos and i have had a few of them done already and hope to get a few more when i have the money. if anyone would like one of these drawings as a tattoo or any i upload in future i have no problem with that, i would consider it an honour that somebody wants my designs scarred onto them.
